NIMHANS PG Entrance Exam
National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is an institute of national importance and the apex body in the mental health and neurosciences in India. This institute of ‘national importance’ came into existence since 1974.
The NIMHANS PG entrance exam takes place twice a year; for January and July sessions respectively. Through the entrance test, the premier institute offers admission into M.Ch. Neuro Surgery/D.M. Neurology and M.D. Psychiatry courses at various campuses.
The online registrations tentatively kickstart in the first week of August for January intake and in the first week of January for the July intake. For each course, there will be a separate merit list even though it’s a common entrance test for all of them.
About 20,000 medical graduates sit for this exam across the country.

NIMHANS PG Exam Eligibility

- MBBS degree from a recognized University or from any other University recognized as equivalent thereto by NIMHANS and by the Medical Council of India.
- The candidate should have completed the compulsory rotation internship of one year after MBBS or its equivalent as recognized by the Medical Council of India on or before the date of commencement of course.
- Candidates who have MD/MS/DNB/DPM from a recognized University or from any other University recognized as equivalent thereto by NIMHANS and by the Medical Council of India may apply for the course.
- Candidates who are awaiting the results may also appear for the entrance test subject to production of proof of having passed the examination on or before the date of admission to the course.
- Both Indian and foreign nationals can apply
- Age: for PG and Super Speciality courses, the age shall not be more than 32 and 37 years respectively as on 1 January 2021. Age relaxation ( 5 yrs for SC/ST and 3 yrs OBC) applies for the reservation categories.
NIMHANS PG Exam Pattern

NIMHANS PG Exam FAQs
1.Does NIMHANS consider NEET PG or other national level exam scores for admission?
A: No, it doesn’t. To get admission into the courses offered by the NIMHANS, you have to sit for its entrance exam. That’s it!
2.Is it possible to take a mock test for the NIMHANS PG exam?
A: Yes, it is. The mock tests will be conducted by the NIMHANS 15 days prior to the online exam (or Computer Based Test).
3.Is there a separate test for the MD in Psychiatry?
A: Yes, there is. You have to sit for the exam with 70 questions in 60 minutes and a domain test of 30 questions in 30 minutes. The same holds good for DM in Neurology and MCh in Neuroscience.
4.Is it possible to apply for multiple courses in a single application form?
A: Yes, it is possible. The maximum number of courses you have to choose is three only.
