1. 1. St. Xavier’s College is proud to announce that it has begun as an Autonomous College under the University of Mumbai from the academic year 2010-11. Xavier applied for Academic Autonomy in October 2007. It was granted permission for this, after due process, by the University of Mumbai, in March 2009 and by the Government of Maharashtra in August 2009. 6.PRESIDENCY COLLEGE [PC], CHENNAI

PC Highlights:

1.  It had taken decades for the College to take shape. At the behest of Sir Thomas Munro a Committee of public instruction was formed in 1826. In 1836 the duties of the Committee of public instruction was taken over by “The Committee of Native Education.” 
2. The plan drawn up by the Committee did not commend themselves to Lord Elphinstone who in turn proposed nineteen resolutions that were passed unanimously. The gist of the resolutions was as follows:”That it is expedient that a Central Collegiate Institution or University should be established at Madras”. “The Madras University consists of two principal departments, a College for the Higher Branches of Literature, Philosophy and Science, and a High School for the Cultivation of English Literature and of the vernacular languages of India and the elementary departments of Philosophy and Science”.
3. These proposals of Lord Elphinstone which were afterward known as the “Fundamental Rules” were approved by the Members of Council and received the sanction of the Government in January 1840.
4. In a month’s time, the governing body of the University was formed and it held its first meeting on 8th February 1840. The governing body requested Thiru. Mount Stuart Elphinstone to select a suitable person for the post of Headmaster.

7.MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE – [MCC], CHENNAI

MCC  Highlights:

1.  Madras Christian College traces its origin to the General Assembly School founded by the Rev. John Anderson, a Missionary from the Church of Scotland on 3rd April 1837. Anderson was a pioneer in introducing English medium education in South India. He was ably assisted by Rev. Johnston, Rev. Braidwood and Margaret Locher Anderson. Rev. William Miller who arrived in 1862 upgraded the school to a college by adding F.A. and B.A. courses in 1865 and 1867. Along with a few other Protestant missions in Madras, Miller transformed the institution and named it ‘Madras Christian College’ on 1st January 1877. Miller’s bold academic vision, supported by the generous contribution from his family members, old students and the Madras Government raised the most impressive array of college buildings and hostels (student homes) opposite the High Court complex. Miller was succeeded by worthy leaders like Professors Skinner, E.M. Macphail, Meston and Hogg.
2. The rapid expansion of the College and the congested physical space necessitated the shifting of the college from George Town to the 400 acre sylvan Selaiyur forest in Tambaram. The ‘great migration’ took place on 30th January 1937 with a thanksgiving service in which Governor Lord Erskine participated. Professor Edward Barnes and his wife Alice Barnes, who lived on the campus since 1932, painstakingly shaped and nurtured the campus, by planting hundreds of rare plants, and carving out dusty roads. Swiss Architect Henry Schaetti designed the majestic main buildings. The College hosted the famous International Missionary Conference in 1938. Women students were admitted from 1939.  
3. Dr Alexander Boyd, who was the Principal for 18 long years (1938-’56) further shaped the character and ethos of the College. He was ably assisted by a host of European and Indian faculty. Professor J.R. Macphail was the last of the Scottish Principals to have served the college between 1956 and 1962.
4. A new era dawned in 1962 (125th Year of MCC) when Dr. Chandran Devanesen took over as the first Indian Principal, who further enriched the academic stature of the College and broadened the scope of the educational process by taking it to the neighborhood. Dr. Devanesen’s successors have each contributed in their own way to the growth and development of the Institution.
5. The year 1978 was path-breaking as MCC became one of the earliest colleges to be granted the status of Autonomy. This status enabled the college to introduce new courses, innovative curricular changes in tune with changing times and examination reforms with the focus on learner-centered continuous assessments. Autonomy also enabled the College to introduce diploma and certificate courses through the School of Continuing Education. The College also introduced vocational degree programs in the Departments of History, Zoology and Commerce in 1994.
6. The Self – Financed Stream was started in 1999. Degree programmes of contemporary relevance and employability are offered in the Self – Financed Stream. The College now has thirty-two departments under both the Aided and Self – Financed Streams offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research programmes (M.Phil.& Ph.D.).
7. The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was introduced in 2003 – 2004 enabling the College to provide more choice for the students, especially interdisciplinary options and rationalized the workload of each paper in tune with the credits awarded.
8. The Halls of residence for men – Selaiyur, St. Thomas’s and Heber and the Martin, Margaret and Barnes for women, contribute to the rich diversity and hustle-bustle of the campus life. The sprawling sports fields, as well as the cultural ambiance of the college, provide impetus towards students’ personality and their all-round development.
9. All key milestones in the history of the college were befittingly celebrated. The 50th year i.e. 1887 witnessed the birth of Philosophy and History Unions, besides the Tamil and Telugu Associations. The centenary of the College celebrated in 1937 was marked with the relocation of the college to the Tambaram campus. In 1962 (125th Year) Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, our distinguished alumnus, visited the college and the  MCC  school in his capacity as the Vice- President and the President of India. The 150th year was commemorated in 1987, with the Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi participating in the main function and declaring open the Miller Memorial Library.  Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the then President of India lent his gracious presence at the 170th  year celebrations in 2007 and inaugurated the Centre for International Social Work.

8.HINDU COLLEGE [HC], NEW DELHI

HC Highlights:

1.  Late Shri Krishna Dassji Gurwale founded the College in the historic Kinari Bazar (Chandni Chowk), with prominent Delhi citizens as trustees. A boarding house has served as student residence since 1899. In 1908 the College shifted to a building donated by Rai Bahadur Sultan Singh in Kashmiri Gate, and a Hostel was added.
2. From inception, the College is deeply connected to the national movement for independence: some Governing Body members and trustees are directly involved in the Swadeshi and Boycott movements. Board member Master Ameer Chand, associated with Lala Hardyal and Rash Behari Bose, was hanged by the colonial government in 1915.
3. Earlier affiliated to Panjab University, the College now becomes affiliated with Delhi University and sanctioned to teach M.A. classes.Democratic student governance: College Parliament is instituted with a PM and LO. 4. College Hostel gives refuge to revolutionaries like Chandrashekhar Azad. Students, both boys and girls, join Non-cooperation Movement and the “Simon Go Back” processions in the Chandni Chowk area.
5. College students found the Harijan Service League. The Hostel Warden N.K. Nigam is tried for supporting “terrorist” activities. As national resistance grows, College Parliament continues to host addresses by national leaders—Pt. Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, C.F. Andrews, Motilal Nehru. Sarojini Naidu attends Tarun Samaj (Social Reform Society) meetings. Surya Sen and Anant of the famous Chittagong Armoury Raid visit the Hostel. The Hindi Sahitya Sabha hosts Munshi Premchand.
6. Two College students excel in the Indian Civil Services Examinations. K.K. Birla received his Intermediate Science degree from College in 1937. Dr. Anju Srivastava takes over as Officiating Principal, the second College alumna to hold the office.
7. Construction begins on a four-story building for Girls’ Hostel and a new Academic Block having, with the foundation stone laid by Lt. Governor of Delhi. More than 600 students and teachers participate in the National Knowledge Network Video Conference in the auditorium. The college participates in the launch of MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) of Delhi University.

1.  Presidency University has a unique place in history. It was one of the first institutes of Western-type higher education in Asia. In 1817, a group of enlightened Indians and Englishmen set up the Hindoo College.This was taken over by the British Government in 1855 as the College of the Bengal Presidency, and placed in 1857 under the newly founded Calcutta University.
