KMC Highlights:

1.  Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore was started in 1955, utilizing the clinical facilities of the Government Wenlock Hospital and Government Lady Goschen Hospital. In 1961, the preclinical section was started in Mangalore.
2. The Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore became an independent unit in 1977. Apart from the two Government hospitals, there is a teaching hospital attached to the College viz., the KMC Hospital, Attavar, established in 1992 with a bed strength of 500. The infrastructural facilities are comparable to international standards with seven big air-conditioned lecture halls fitted with modern audio-visual teaching aids including multimedia projectors and a modern, fully air-conditioned library with a seating capacity of about 500, and with internet facility. The library has over 10,000 books and subscribes to more than 350 journals annually.
3. In the year 2001, Centre for Basic Sciences was started at Bejai for the first-year students. Apart from the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, there are two lecture halls of capacity 250 each. Both ladies and boys hostels are located within the basic sciences complex for the first-year students. The Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore provides hostel accommodation for its students in nine hostels. Out of these five are ladies hostels. There is also a Medical Education Unit which conducts an Orientation program for students, interns and postgraduates, and also provides resource material for the teaching faculty members.

1. 1. From its inception SJMC has been a truly National Medical College drawing faculty and students from all across the country. During the formative years the college benefited immensely from the efforts of early pioneers with illustrious professional careers who gave up jobs in established medical institutions to join a fledgling medical college.    3. The corner stone of the Medical College was blessed by Pope Paul VI in Bombay during the Eucharist Congress in 1964 and was laid at the project site on 27 July 1965 by Shri V.V. Giri, the Governor of Karnataka and later the President of India. On the completion of the buildings, the College was dedicated to the cause of Medical Education, Research and Healthcare on 29 September 1968 at a ceremony presided over by the President of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain. In June 1968, the College moved from its temporary premises of St. Mary’s Industrial School and Orphanage to its 140-acre campus in Koramangala, Bengaluru.
   4. Initially St. Martha’s Hospital served as the clinical facility of the Medical College. In the year 1975, the newly constructed St. John’s Medical College Hospital became operational on the College Campus. St. John’s College of Nursing started as a School of Nursing on July 1, 1980. It was raised to the status of a College of Nursing on September 25, 1989, and conducts various nursing courses.
   5. For the last ten years, St. John’s Medical College has consistently been ranked among the top 10 medical colleges in the country. KIMS Highlights:

1. Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences was established in 1980 by the Vokkaligara Sangha. The Vokkaligara Sangha took a formal decision on 2.September.1979 to start a medical college from the year 1980–81 and applied for permission to the registrar, Bangalore University.
2. On 30 November 1980 the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri. R Gundu Rao laid the foundation stone of the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital in the premises of the Sangha and announced the grant of vacant land in Banashankari to be used for the construction of college buildings and hostels. Thereafter, the Sangha appointed Dr M Basavaraju, professor of Physiology as the principal on 1 January 1981 and other staff by March 1981 and classes were started regularly from 16 March 1981. 1. In 1991, the Islamic Academy of education, a not-for-profit trust committed to the upliftment of minorities in general and Muslims in particular, was established by entrepreneur Mr. Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi as its Chairman.
2. The trustees perceived a hiatus in the area of Health Professional education and so decided to start a Dental college.
