Introduction
Students pursuing MBBS course from any medical university or college in India are needed to complete the Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI). The students also need to get a registration certification from the Medical Council of India after the completion of their MBBS course. To get this registration certificate, the students must complete this rotator internship of one year after graduating in MBBS. Afterwards, the graduated students can start their career as a practitioner of medicine with the registration certificate provided by MCI. In this article, we will discuss the MBBS internship in details so the student can easily understand this course in detail.
Internship after MBBS graduation
The internship is a training program and in the medical field, an MBBS graduate can gain his knowledge about the modalities and methods to administer health and medical care practices in a real working environment. MCI introduced this CRRI program to acquire skills and abilities under the supervision of a professional to assist the MBBS students so they can practice medicine on their own. Moreover, the real working environment helps the students to know the similarity and difference between the things they study during their MBBS and the reality of this profession. To get a license to practice medicine an MBBS graduate also need to have CRRI which is an important eligibility criterion to pursue PG studies.
MCI provides the registration certificate (provisional) to the graduates of MBBS that provide them eligibility to start the internship. After completing the internship the graduates get CRRI completion certificate that is important to get a permanent registration certificate that is issued by MCI. The permanent registration certificate then helps in the issuance of medical practising license along with the final MBBS degree. This rotator internship should be completed by MBBS graduates for a mandatory duration which is 12 months for almost all fields of medicine. During this one year of the internship the candidate learns subjects like the following:
Subject | Time duration |
Medicine+ psychiatry (15 days) | 60 days |
Community medicine | 60 days |
Surgery + Anesthesia (15 days) | 60 days |
Family welfare planning + Gynecology/Obstt. | 60 days |
Paediatrics | 30 days |
Orthopaedics + PMR | 30 days |
Ophthalmology | 15 days |
E.N.T. | 15 days |
Elective posting | 15 days |

This is the total internship with different subjects along with their time duration of training. In the 15 days subject of elective posting, the student can select one subject from the following:
- Radio-Diagnosis
- Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases
- Blood Bank
- Psychiatry
- Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
For functioning independently, the MBBS graduates make a lot of efforts during their internship because the things they will learn here are going to be a major part of their future career. All these subjects require a proper understanding of the field and subject. Subjects like psychology are even more complex during internship because it requires time to understand the patient’s mind to identify the issues and proper treatment for the same.
Job opportunities after completing the MBBS internship:
The internship not only trains the MBBS graduates in their field but also opens new doors for future opportunities. With the permanent license of medical practice, the graduates can join some hospital or clinic and make a good sum of money by providing healthcare services to the patients. Some graduates open their clinic and provide healthcare services to the patients individually. The salary and pay rates depend upon the quality of healthcare you provide to the patient especially when you are working your clinic. Some MBBS graduates perform so well in their internship that they open their small clinic and gets popular in a small period. Along with time, they grow the scale of their healthcare clinic and might turn it into a hospital.
The internship program is mandatory for all the students even if they have completed their MBBS from some other country. They also have to pursue this one-year training to learn medical practices in a real environment and to know how to deal with patients in India. And Indian patients might have different behaviour than patients of other countries so the doctor must have experience with Indian patients if they are working in India. So if you have done your MBBS from India then you cannot do your internship from abroad. Usually, the same colleges provide an internship in which the student has done MBBS and if the student opts some other approved hospital that must have an MOU with the same college or university. If still, you want to pursue the internship from some other hospital then you need to take permission from your college to do so.
Salary after MBBS internship
The MBBS graduates get a handsome salary package after completing their internship because the healthcare organizations value the permanent registration certificate. In the starting phase, the salary will be low but there are high chances of promotion in this field. If you are someone who believes in individual work then you can open your clinic and make money as much as you can. The seniors in this field make more than 6 lakh annually and more if they also perform some intricate surgeries. But the medical professional should not think of money as their primary objective because their main task is to provide people with the best quality healthcare and treatment.
Conclusion
The internship has its purpose that one might not be able to do during their graduation because the internship provides the graduate with a real working environment. Sometimes the reality is different than what you have studied in books hence it is beneficial to have real work experience before entering the health sector.
