History of Indian Institute of Technology(IIT):
In 1946, Sir Jogendra Singh of the Viceroy’s Executive Council set up a committee for the creation of Higher Technical Institutions in India. The committee was headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar with The 22-members final draft report made recommendations for the establishment of IIT institutions in various locations in India, based on Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The first IIT was established in May 1950 at the Hijli Detention Camp in Kharagpur, West Bengal. On 18 August 1951, The “Indian Institute of Technology” inaugurated by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act was passed in the Parliament of India on 15-09-1956, stating it as an Institute of National Importance. The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, addressed the first convocation of IIT Kharagpur in 1956.
History of National Institute of Technology(NIT):
The central government has established Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) to impersonate the IITs at a territorial level and function as a role model for the local colleges in the state during the second five-year plan (1956–60). The admission in NITs carried through AIEEE previous now it is replaced by JEE Mains. Total 17 RECs were built from 1959 in major states. NITs was a joint and collaborative project of the central government and state government.
